Three months at Biddenden Vineyards, an unforgettable experience!
My name is Mélanie Gassian, I’m 20 years old and I come from a village called Le Porge on the Atlantic coast near Bordeaux.
As Marine before me, at the end of my second year at the Purpan engineering school I had to do an internship in an English-speaking country to improve my English. Being interested in the wine industry without knowing exactly what my plan is for the future, I wanted to find an internship where I could see a lot of things from viticulture to wine marketing. After talking with Marine, I was immediately thrilled with the idea of coming to Biddenden Vineyards. That’s how I found myself on Saturday, June 29, driving on the other side of the road to come in Biddenden.
Upon arrival, I was very well received by Sally and Julian who invited me to a barbecue but also by their sons with whom I was boating on Sunday. During my three months of internship I was also regularly invited to share meals with them. Thanks to their generosity, I immediately felt at home.
The welcome from the people working here was just as friendly, especially Rowan, Emily and Tom who work at the office as well as the sales assistants who helped me a lot and supported me when I tried to express myself in English, which was not easy every day.
During this internship, I was able to participate in various activities ranging from work in the office to the harvest. For most of the internship, I worked at the store (which helped me a lot for English!) Or at the office but I was also helped a few times at the “winery” on the bottling line or to prepare the vans for deliveries. But what I liked the most during this course are the shows and festivals, including The Kent Show and Godstoneberry festival that will be my best memories with the grape harvest I took part in at the end of my internship.
Thanks to Julian, I had the opportunity to attend events such as meetings or tastings. I will remember in particular the “Wine of Great Britain South East event” where I had the chance to meet Oz Clark, an icon in the English wine industry (although, I must admit, France was not really put in the spotlight that night)
Finally, I would really like to thank Sally, Julian, Tom, Will and Sam for allowing me to live this experience that I will keep in my memory all my life and who knows …. See you soon maybe!
Trois mois à Biddenden Vineyards, une expérience inoubliable!
Je m’appelle Mélanie Gassian, j’ai 20 ans et je viens d’un village appelé Le Porge sur le littoral Atlantique, près de Bordeaux.
Comme Marine avant moi, à la fin de ma deuxième année à l’école d’ingénieurs de Purpan j’ai dû réaliser un stage dans un pays anglophone pour améliorer mon anglais. Étant intéressée par l’industrie viticole sans savoir exactement ce que je voulais faire plus tard, je souhaitais donc trouver un stage où je puisse voir un maximum de choses de la viticulture à la commercialisation du vin. Après avoir discuté avec Marine, j’ai tout de suite été emballée par l’idée de venir à Biddenden Vineyards. C’est comme ça que je me suis retrouvée le samedi 29 juin à conduire de l’autre côté de la route pour venir à Biddenden.
Dès mon arrivée, j’ai été très bien accueillie par Sally et Julian qui m’ont invitée à un barbecue mais aussi par leurs fils avec qui j’ai été faire du bateau dès le dimanche. Au cours de mes trois mois de stage j’ai aussi été régulièrement invitée à partager des repas avec eux. Grâce à leur générosité, je me suis tout de suite bien sentie au domaine.
L’accueil de la part des personnes travaillant ici a été tout aussi sympathique et notamment Rowan, Emily et Tom qui travaillent au bureau ainsi que les vendeuses qui m’ont beaucoup aidée et supportée quand j’essayais de m’exprimer en anglais, ce qui n’était pas tous les jours facile.
Au cours de ce stage, j’ai pu participer à des activités très diverses allant du travail au bureau aux vendanges. Pour la plupart du stage, j’ai travaillé au magasin (ce qui m’a beaucoup aidé pour l’anglais !) ou au bureau mais j’ai aussi été aidé quelques fois à la « winery » sur la ligne d’embouteillage ou pour préparer les vans pour les livraisons. Mais ce que j’ai le plus aimé au cours de ce stage sont les shows et festivals, notamment Le Kent Show et Godstoneberry festival qui resteront mes meilleurs souvenirs, avec les vendanges auxquelles j’ai pu prendre part à la fin de mon stage.
Grâce à Julian, j’ai eu l’occasion d’assister à des évènements tels que des meetings ou des dégustations. Je me souviendrai notamment du « Wine of Great Britain South East event » où j’ai eu la chance de rencontrer Oz Clark, une icône dans l’industrie viticole anglaise (même si, je dois l’avouer, la France n’était pas vraiment mise à l’honneur ce soir-là).
Pour finir, je souhaiterai vraiment remercier Sally, Julian, Tom, Will et Sam pour m’avoir permis de vivre cette expérience que je garderai en mémoire toute ma vie et qui sait…. À Bientôt peut-être !
