Biddenden Vineyards, a place that I recommend after 3 months working here!
I am Lucile JACQUIN and I turned 20 at Biddenden Vineyards. But how did I get there? To achieve my 2nd year of study at the “Ecole d’Ingénieurs de Purpan”, an agronomic engineering school in Toulouse (France), I had the opportunity to do a placement of 12 weeks in an English-speaking country, with the aim of improving the language while also taking advantage of a chance to live an amazing and unique experience abroad.
As the first intern to come to the vineyard after Covid, I have been so well received by the Barnes family and by everyone working here. They all have taught me so many things with kindness, patience, and goodwill, and I sincerely thank them for that!
For 3 months, I have undertaken so many different tasks allowing me to discover, practice and learn numerous skills. I spent a large part of my internship in the shop (to sell products and to manage tastings) which was beneficial for me to learn about Biddenden’s products, and above all to improve my English by speaking to many customers.
I also worked a lot in the office. I mainly had to prepare internet orders for individuals and invoices for pubs, restaurants, delis, little shops… Thanks to that, I discovered many places to stop during my days off. I also have been part of Monday morning meetings. It has introduced me to the understanding of the management of a company.
In addition, I spent some of my days in the winery, bottling and apple pressing. I was also present in the vineyard, taking off leaves so that the grapes are more exposed to the sun, and obviously for the picking of the grapes. We started picking the last day of August with the Ortega variety. I really enjoyed picking first because it represents one more opportunity to meet new people and to speak through the rows of vines, and then because it’s a completely different job that I was used to do in the office and in the shop.
Participating in events was definitely my favourite part of the internship. I had the chance to go to various events including Hastings Seafood & Wine Festival, Kent County Show, Tractorfest, and WineGB Trade Tasting in London. I sincerely appreciated my experience at Biddenden Vineyards especially due to the variety of the work.
For this second-year experience I originally wanted to go to another continent. In the end, I just had to cross the Channel and drive 45 minutes on the other side of the road to put my luggage at Biddenden Vineyards for the summer season.
I have been so well welcomed by the Barnes family who made me the first of many barbecues when I arrived. Indeed, they often invited me to join them for dinner, and I guarantee that Sally is a fantastic cook! The accommodation provided on site was beyond my expectations: an independent cosy flat above Sally and Julian’s house where I immediately felt at home.
I shared memorable moments with the family (lovely dinners together), Liz (who showed me nice places to visit such as Leeds Castle, and who spent a lot of time with me by sharing many meals together), and the staff (with whom I went several times to the pub!). I will always remember these rare and precious moments and I would like to thank them again for this exceptional experience. I would particularly point out that English people are very kind and friendly (we must admit more than French people). That is why everyone visiting Biddenden Vineyards is guaranteed to be warmly received and well advised thanks to the professionalism of the team.
I am now already looking forward to go back to Biddenden Vineyards.
Biddenden Vineyards, un endroit que je recommande après 3 mois à travailler ici!
Je suis Lucile JACQUIN et j’ai fêté mes 20 ans à Biddenden Vineyards. Mais comment en suis-je arrivée là ? Pour valider ma deuxième année d’études à l’Ecole d’Ingénieurs de Purpan, une école d’ingénieurs agronomes à Toulouse (France), j’ai eu l’opportunité de faire un stage de 12 semaines dans un pays anglophone, dans le but d’améliorer la langue tout en profitant de cette occasion pour vivre une expérience unique et incroyable à l’étranger.
Première stagiaire à venir au vignoble après le Covid, j’ai été si bien reçue par la famille Barnes et par tout le monde travaillant ici. Ils m’ont tous appris tellement de choses avec gentillesse, patience et bonne volonté, et je les remercie sincèrement pour cela !
Durant 3 mois, j’ai entrepris tellement de tâches différentes me permettant de découvrir, pratiquer et apprendre de nombreuses compétences.
J’ai passé une grande partie de mon stage dans la boutique (pour vendre les produits et gérer les dégustations), ce qui m’a été bénéfique pour en apprendre plus sur les produits de Biddenden mais surtout pour améliorer mon anglais en parlant à de nombreux de clients.
J’ai aussi beaucoup travaillé dans les bureaux. Je devais principalement préparer les commandes internet pour les particuliers et les factures pour les pubs, restaurants, épiceries… Grace à cela, j’ai découvert beaucoup d’endroits où m’arrêter durant mes jours de repos. J’ai aussi pris part aux réunions du lundi matin. Ceci m’a introduit à la compréhension du management d’une entreprise.
De plus, j’ai passé quelques jours dans le chai pour la mise en bouteille et le pressage des pommes. J’étais aussi présente dans le vignoble à enlever certaines feuilles des vignes pour que le raisin soit plus exposé au soleil ; et bien évidemment pour les vendanges. Nous avons commencé le dernier jour d’août avec la variété Ortega. J’ai vraiment apprécié les vendanges, premièrement puisque cela représente une opportunité de plus de rencontrer de nouvelles personnes et de parler à travers les rangées de vignes, et aussi puisque c’est un travail totalement différent de ce que j’avais l’habitude de faire dans les bureaux ou dans le magasin.
Participer aux évènements a été ma partie favorite du stage. J’ai eu la chance d’aller à de nombreux événements dont Hastings Seafood & Wine Festival, Kent County Show, Tractorfest, et WineGB Trade Tasting à London.
J’ai donc sincèrement apprécié cette expérience à Biddenden Vineyards principalement grâce à la diversité du travail.
Pour cette expérience de deuxième année, je voulais initialement aller sur un autre continent. Finalement, j’ai seulement eu à traverser la Manche et conduire 45 minutes de l’autre côté de la route pour poser mes bagages à Biddenden Vineyards pour la saison estivale.
J’ai été si bien accueillie par la famille Barnes qui m’a fait le premier barbecue d’une longue série à mon arrivée. En effet, ils m’ont souvent invitée à les rejoindre pour le dîner, et je peux garantir que Sally est une cuisinière incroyable !
Le logement fourni sur site était au-dessus de mes attentes : un appartement confortable et indépendant au-dessus de la maison de Julian et Sally où je me suis immédiatement sentie comme à la maison.
J’ai partagé des moments mémorables avec la famille (de bons dîners ensemble), Liz (qui m’a montrée de beaux endroits à visiter comme Leeds Castle, et qui a passé beaucoup de temps avec moi en partageant de nombreux repas ensemble), et le personnel (avec qui je suis allée plusieurs fois au pub !). Je me souviendrai toujours de ces moments rares et précieux et je voudrais encore une fois les remercier de m’avoir fait vivre cette expérience exceptionnelle. Je voulais particulièrement relever que les Anglais sont très gentils et amicaux (je dois même admettre plus que les Français). C’est pourquoi tout le monde visitant Biddenden Vineyards est assuré d’être chaleureusement reçu et bien conseillé grâce au professionnalisme de l’équipe. Je me réjouis maintenant déjà de retourner à Biddenden Vineyards.
