Our wines are produced only with grapes grown here on the estate and we take great pride in the knowledge that our winemakers are both expert vineyard managers, giving a true meaning to our grape to glass philosophy.

The skills, expertise and passion that go into crafting our quality English still and sparkling wines have been developed and perfected over 55 years, with each generation of the Barnes family adding their own unique flair.

Here at Biddenden 12 different grape varieties are planted across 25 acres of gentle south facing slopes, on sandy loam over clay situated in a shallow sheltered valley. Combined this creates perfect conditions for Germanic and French grape varieties.

Ortega, a German grape developed from crossbreeding Müller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe, is our signature variety and covers just over half of the vineyard. Other varieties which go into making our award-winning wines include Bacchus, Dornfelder, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Reichensteiner and Scheurebe. There are also plantings of Schönburger, Huxelrebe and Gewürztraminer.

What could be more natural in a traditional apple growing area than to produce cider?

Crafted using the Barnes’ family recipe, which has been perfected over the last 40 years, all our ciders are made from the juice of carefully selected culinary and dessert apples. This gives our traditional strong Kentish cider a more wine like style than those found in the West Country produced from bittersweet apples. Working closely with local farmers we ensure all our apples are sourced right from the Garden of England, making our cider truly Kentish. Alongside our traditional still ciders, we also produce Biddies, a range of lightly sparkling ciders as well as Biddenden Sparkling Cider, bottle fermented by the traditional method.

Working with small family farms we have created a range of blended and single varietal juices each offering its own distinctive style and drinking experience. Our relationship with these independent local farmers allows us to select orchard ripe fruit which reflects the true richness of the Garden of England.
